Designers swear by this minimalist bed style to evoke a serene vibe.

Colin King, the renowned stylist and longtime AD contributor, has coined a term for his favourite minimalist bed style: "grandma-style." This look is characterised by a simple and serene aesthetic that exudes elegance and tranquility.

What's the inspiration behind this style? A Diane Arbus photograph of a motel, capturing the essence of simplicity and comfort, along with Luis Barragan's monk-like bedroom in Mexico City and the bedroom from the Sagredo Palace at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. These references show how the grandma-style bed is not just King's go-to, but a timeless look that others have also adopted. The beauty of the grandma-style bed is how it balances a tidy, clean atmosphere with a graceful elegance. It's a soothing sanctuary, making it the perfect vibe for a bedroom.

The Rise of the Minimalist Bed: Embracing Simplicity in Interior Design
In the ever-shifting landscape of interior design, the winds of change sweep away the old, ushering in a new era of style. As the stars align, the verdict echoes: the age of lavish bedding embellishments is waning, yielding to the elegant simplicity of a minimalist coverlet. This shift towards a more refined aesthetic has captured the imagination of photographers and design experts alike.

Photographer and Design Guru, Colin King, with his keen eye for composition, highlights the challenge of bed styling during photoshoots. The bed, a behemoth in a room, can easily dominate the scene and skew the overall balance of a shot. However, a minimalist bed, with its understated profile, offers a calming influence, a serene presence that complements and elevates the space. This pared-down approach also ensures a cleaner, more polished appearance on camera, making it a practical choice even in the absence of a soft stylist.

The beauty of a minimalist bed lies in its versatility, as it seamlessly integrates into any bedroom setting, from a cozy home retreat to a luxurious hotel suite. At DKT Interior Design Studio we understand the importance of creating visually balanced and impactful spaces, and advocate for the minimalist bed as a key element in achieving this goal. So, let go of the decorative excess and embrace the tranquil elegance of a minimalist bed - a timeless design choice that exudes sophistication and serenity.

To achieve the perfect look for your bed, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Start by removing all pillows from the bed. This will allow you to work with a clean canvas.
Step 2: Next, completely flatten the top sheet, making sure there are no wrinkles or creases. Smooth it out as much as possible.
Step 3: Lay the bedcover flat on the bed, ensuring that it is centred. Smooth out any wrinkles or folds on the top surface.
Step 4: Fold down the top of the bedcover about a third of the way down the mattress. This will create a neat and stylish look.
Step 5: Grab two pillows that are preferably the same size and lay them flat on the bed, side by side. Leave a small gap between the two pillows.
Step 6: Pull the pillows down to be on top of the folded bedcover, positioning them about three inches over the crease towards the edge of the bed. This will create a layered effect.
Step 7: Lift one side of the bedcover over the pillows towards the headboard, then repeat this step with the other side. Smooth out any wrinkles or folds to ensure a clean finish.
Step 8: Once you have completed the previous steps, take some time to fuss with the pooling of the excess fabric around the bed. Allow it to hit the floor in a way that feels natural and aesthetically pleasing.
Step 9: If you wish to tuck the bedcover into the platform, consider styling the bed with some bolster pillows. Additionally, adding a nice large blanket or quilt at the end of the bed can create a cozy and inviting look.
By following these steps, you will be able to achieve a well-styled bed that brings a touch of elegance and sophistication to your bedroom. Experiment with different fabrics, colours, and patterns to create a look that reflects your personal style and complements the overall design of your space. Happy styling!
